Antelope!
May 4/5, 2026
On a day in which I spent more time than I would have were I more practiced getting my desktop computer working properly again, I reach back to 2008 and the trip in which I fulfilled a boyhood dream to photograph African animals in their native habitat. Herewith for your viewing pleasure some of the antelopes of Southern Africa — Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
At a water hole in South Africa’s Sabi Sabi game preserve, a greater kudu “stands guard” over a small herd of impala.
An impala buck shows off his speed in Botswana’s Limyati bush country.
A young pair of greater kudu reenact the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet in Botswana’s Linyati region.
A red lechwe stands safe from lions in the marshes of Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
A tiny steenbuck in Linyati. No bigger than a fox.
What’s new gnu? Yes, wildebeest are antelope too. Like this one in South Africa’s Sabi Sabi game preserve.

I've always empathized with gnu, having no idea that gnarly wrinkled black creature was an antelope. Even at my age I learn something new every day. Thank you, sir.
How delightful!
Especially the tiny one
the size of a fox
